Rector
Sebastian Schütze has been Rector of the University of Vienna since 2022. Following important academic positions at the Freie Universität Berlin, the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome and the Queen’s University in Kingston/Canada, Sebastian Schütze has been Professor of Modern Art History at the University of Vienna since 2009, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Historical and Culture Studies since 2018. He is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. His research focusses on Italy’s art history and cultural history, the history of collections in Vienna and Central Europe as well as the productive interactions between literature and visual arts. A matter of particular concern is making his research findings accessible for a larger audience, also in international exhibitions.

- 1980-1985: Degree programmes in art history, classical archaeology and ancient history in Berlin, Rome, Cologne and Bonn
- 1986-1988: Doctoral scholarship holder at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute)
- 1989: Doctorate under Professor Heinrich Thelen at the Freie Universität Berlin with a thesis on the topic of studies on the paintings by Massimo Stanzione, including a critical catalogue of his works
- 1989-1991: Postdoctoral scholarship holder at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute)
- 1992-1997: Academic assistant at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute)
- 1997: Habilitation at the Freie Universität Berlin on the topic of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, late Pope Urban VIII, as client and patron. Contributions to an archaeology of Roman high Baroque.
- 1997-2001: Substitute professor at the Universities of Leipzig, Dresden and Münster
- 2001-2003: C3 research professor at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute), establishment and management of the interdisciplinary research group on strategies representation in the early modern period
- 2003-2009: Chair for Art History, Bader Chair in Southern Baroque Art, Queen´s University, Kingston, Canada
- 2009-2022: Professor of Early Modern Art History, University of Vienna
